20 years West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
20 years ago, in 1999, Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra as a workshop for Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab musicians to promote coexistence and intercultural dialogue. In order to celebrate this year’s very special jubilee, there will be a summer as well as an autumn tour with a variety of musical highlights and outstanding soloists: Martha Argerich, Michael Barenboim, and for the first time, Anne-Sophie Mutter.
SUMMER TOUR 2019
Already on June 30, the Orchestra will give a first concert in Sevilla before the summer tour then starts off one month later with the ‘Festival de Musica y Reflexión’ in Buenos Aires – this time in a new venue, the concert hall at the Centro Cultural Kirchner. The Orchestra will continue on its way with stops in the acclaimed concert halls of London, Salzburg, Lucerne, and with the concert at Waldbühne, Berlin. The diverse concert programs include several works by L. v. Beethoven: Egmont's Overture, the Symphony No.7 and the Violin Concerto with soloist Michael Barenboim, as well as works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Lutoslawski, Previn, and Sibelius. At the same time, it expands beyond symphonic works by incorporating concert evenings solely dedicated to chamber music.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra returns to Berlin’s Waldbühne on August 17, 2019, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. This concert also marks another anniversary—serving as a prelude to the Beethoven Year 2020, in which the music world will celebrate the composer’s 250th birthday. The program, performed in the breathtaking outdoor setting, is entirely dedicated to the music of Beethoven: with the composer’s Violin Concerto, featuring Michael Barenboim as the soloist, and his Seventh Symphony.
